File types and extensions
File extension DOC is most commonly associated with documents produced by Microsoft Word, the popular word processing application bundled with all versions of Microsoft Office. Many other applications also use the DOC file extension as a generic term to define a document of some form, though its use is not widespread. File extension doc File extension DMG is used by Apple Mac OS X Disk Image files. Mac OS X natively support DMG files with the bundled Apple Disk Utility, and can mount and treat them as though they are physical disk volumes. Mac OS Classic originally used the IMG file format for the same purposes, though this has now been superseded by DMG format. File extension dmg The JNLP file itself is a human readable file containing settings and configuration information formatted with XML. This information includes the location of the application's jar file, the name of the main class and any additional parameters and set up information the application needs to work correctly. These files can be created with any of the following software packages: Oracle, Paradox, Mozilla Firefox, Windows XP and many others. File extension ipd File extension BIN is most commonly associated with a binary encoded file, and is a widely used format on several platforms including Windows, Mac, UNIX and Linux. These files contain metadata about java mobile edition applications (MIDlets) that can be downloaded from the Internet. Usually these applications are intended to be used on mobile phones. The applications themselves are contained in .JAR archives. File extension jad Besides Microsoft Office there are other software packages that can view or edit PowerPoint presentation files. These include Apple Keynote, OpenOffice, Google Documents and others.
